Listening Drawing (detail)

Listening Drawing (detail)

Listening to delicate and quiet sounds collected whilst stitching, writing or hand sewing - these listening drawings are a visual response to the collected sounds. Stitched with a threadless sewing machine the needle rips and tears the paper - this is an important part of the process, working with what is - rather than trying to force an outcome

A moment of Interruption

A moment of Interruption

A Moment of Interruption consists of 5 channels of audio - of stitching, writing and breathing. The long Listening Drawing is a visual response to the sound work.

A moment of Interruption

A moment of Interruption

Feeding from the words of John Dewey - I learn by doing. Drawing on the song of my existance my recent work reflects on a year long study and exploration of breath, sound and stillness, through stitch and audio work.
I have termed this work the study of The something of nothing. In the search for stillness traces of my being are recorded in audio and then in stitch. The stitches echo sounds made through repeated acts of daily life, and the seemingly small events, rituals and rhythms which mark the passage of time. Stitching onto or into paper creates a notation, or Listening drawing; the sound informs the stitch which again informs another sound.
